Watches

A watch is a small machine that does one job, slowly, for years, and I find that unreasonably moving.

01 Why

Your phone keeps better time. A mechanical watch is a couple of hundred tiny parts agreeing with each other, wound by your wrist, and it will still be agreeing long after the phone is landfill.

02 What I look for

A dial I can read at a glance, a case that doesn’t fight my cuff, and a movement someone could still service in forty years. Hand-finished edges are a bonus I pretend not to care about.

03 What I’ve learned

Accuracy is overrated. A good one drifts a few seconds a day, and checking how many is half the fun.

04 Mine

Most days
the one on my wrist
In the drawer
the one waiting its turn
One day
the grail
